Up to 1962 Jamaica belonged to the Great Britain but in August 6th, 1962 it had finally gained its Independence. The country is a kingdom where royal power is executed in a form of constitutional monarchy. Head of the state is queen of the Great Britain Elizabeth II but the prime-minister has more powers who is elected by the winning party during parliamentary elections. On the fiftieth anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom, Jamaica expressed its wish to move out of Commonwealth of nations (also known as British Commonwealth of Nations) and become the republic. It was stated by the Jamaican prime-minister Portia Lucretia Simpson-Miller during her first speech while inauguration.
